Steelers RB Chris Rainey Arrested, Then Waived By Team

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh Steelers running back Chris Rainey was arrested Thursday morning in Gainsville, Fla. Then, just a short time later, the team announced they had waived him.

Rainey's arrest happened around 8:30 a.m., when police received a 911 call about a male and female involved in a domestic dispute.

Police say the woman involved in the altercation is Rainey's girlfriend of the last nine months.

Witnesses say Rainey got into an argument with the girlfriend over his cell phone while getting into his roommate's car. Allegedly, he then approached her on the passenger's side, tried to pull her out and slapped her across the face, according to the police report.

The girlfriend was able to get away, but she was still carrying Rainey's phone in her bag. Rainey then caught up with her, grabbed the bag and the two fell, police say.

Neither one suffered visible injuries according to police.

Rainey is charged with simple battery and was taken to the Alachua County Jail for booking.

Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert said, "Under the circumstances and due to this conduct, Chris will no longer be a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers."
