The Stingray Is Back And Drivetime Gets A First Look
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) -- It certainly has created a stir, General Motors got out in front of the pack at the 2013 North American Auto Show in Detroit as they revealed the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Sunday night.
The seventh edition of the iconic sports car was greeted with gasps and applause while a guitarist cranked out a raging solo and General Motors North America President Mark Reuss stood on the stage introducing a blazing red Corvette to the few thousand invited guests like a proud papa.
The crowd even got a little more charged-up when Reuss announced that the Stingray name, which was first introduced in 1963 but had been dormant the last several years, would once again adorn the new Corvette.
Completely new from front to rear except for two parts, the Corvette has a decidedly European look with wide flowing lines, a fastback roof and a radically different rear-end treatment that departs from the dual round taillights in favor of a more angular design.
Who cares about taillights you might say, but ask any Corvette owner, myself included, and they will tell you that change to certain parts of the car does not sit easy.
Other changes under the skin, include the increased use of carbon fiber materials to lighten the car, large video screens for gauges and navigation systems. It also has a brand new 450 horsepower V8 engine that delivers fuel economy and horsepower.
Reuss told me that this car is the "biggest sign" that General Motors is back in its place as one of the top car companies, after emerging from federal assistance when the company was floundering a few years ago.
"The Corvette represents the best that we can do," Reuss said.
The 2014 Stingray is expected to hit showrooms sometime in late 2013. No price has been announced.
