Around The NFL: Chip Kelly Drops Out Of College, Bears Look North, LA Gets No Team In 2013

By Danny Cox

The world of college football has lost another great coach as one more with success has decided to try his hand at the professional level. The Chicago Bears, on the other hand, have decided to head even further north to find their next head coach. As for Los Angeles? Well, they will have to go at least one more year without a professional football team.

Oregon's Chip Kelly lands in Philly as new head coach of the Eagles

Some thought that Chip Kelly would head to the NFL to coach the Cleveland Browns or Buffalo Bills, but he decided to stay at Oregon and stay with success. Well, everyone is entitled to change their minds, and that's just what Kelly did when he decided to accept the head coaching job with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kelly will be introduced as Andy Reid's successor at a press conference on Thursday afternoon. He becomes the 21st head coach in Eagles history, and he will be taking over a team that had high hopes in 2012, but went an abysmal 4-12.

"Chip Kelly will be an outstanding head coach for the Eagles," owner Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement. "He has a brilliant football mind. He motivates his team with his actions as well as his words. He will be a great leader for us and will bring a fresh, energetic approach to our team."

Kelly will be coming from an Oregon team that he led to a 46-7 record over the course of four years. He was one of what was a possible 11 candidates that were interviewed by the Eagles for the vacant spot.

Chicago heads to the CFL and makes Marc Trestman their new head coach

While Philly looked in college, the Bears decided to look north. On Wednesday morning, Montreal Alouette's Marc Trestman was made Chicago's 14th head coach in the history of the franchise.

Trestman is actually a reported quarterback expert and worked with Bears starter Jay Cutler and backup Jason Campbell before their respective NFL drafts. He was an assistant with eight NFL teams and began time as a coach in the CFL back in 2008. Trestman has been out of the NFL for eight years.

Players such as wide receiver Brandon Marshall and Cutler are both very happy about the new coach.

"It's a great hire. I couldn't be more excited. He's been successful wherever he's been," Cutler said, according to the team's website.

A league source has told ESPN that Trestman is already getting his coaching staff together. He will be bringing in former New Orleans Saints interim head coach Aaron Kromer to be the Bears offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

No teams file for move to Los Angeles in 2013

Even though rumors have persisted that a current NFL team would soon be heading to Los Angeles for relocation, it won't be happening before 2014. No teams have or will file for relocation to L.A. by the league mandated deadline of Feb. 15, 2013. That means there will be no team playing in Los Angeles for at least one more year.

There hasn't been an NFL game played in the city since 1994.

Talk has been going on about a proposed $1.5 billion downtown football stadium called Farmers Field, and it would be connected to the Los Angeles Convention Center. The only problem is that the company behind the project is up for sale meaning that all is in limbo right now.
