Police Investigating Fatal Downtown Crash

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police are investigating an accident in Downtown Pittsburgh Friday morning that left an 80-year-old man dead.

According to police, the accident happened on Liberty Avenue outside of the Gateway T stop around 10:37 a.m.

A vehicle, driven by Donald Fox, was traveling inbound from the Fort Pitt Bridge at a high-rate of speed, lost control and crashed into a utility abutment.

"We were lucky today. My understanding is that a bus was just letting off some riders. A lot of people it's happening – coming upon the lunch hour. Just a busy, cold day in downtown. We were quite fortunate that it appears that just the driver of the vehicle at this point is the only one injured," Pittsburgh Police Commander Eric Holmes said.

Witnesses at a nearby bus stop saw the accident and called 911 for help.

"I was standing at the bus stop and not even 10 to 15 minutes after I got there, that car came flying down the Fort Pitt Bridge going into town and going at least 80 and he smacked into that pole and I hurried up and called 911," Anthony Licata said.

Police say an autopsy will be finished tomorrow to determine whether or not Fox suffered from a medical condition.
