Firefighters Save Dog, After It Falls Through Ice On Lake

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A black Labrador that was stranded and swimming to survive in a Lawrence County Lake is back at home with his family.

Firefighters believe the dog was walking across the lake Sunday when he fell through the ice and became stuck among the large chunks.

Crews got the rescue call that the dog was stuck in the middle of the lake after a neighbor called 911.

It happened at the Bessemer Park Lake in Bessemer Borough.

After firefighters first tried to get their boat across one section of the lake, they realized the ice was too thick and had to go to the other side of the lake to get to the dog.

"I can't see any dog drown, just, I just can't see it," Bessemer Borough Firefighter Michael Craycrayft said.

They used their oars to chip away at the chunks of ice.

Once rescuers got close to the dog, they used a lasso to gently guide him to shore.

"Makes me feel good, if it was my dog out there I'd hope that people would come and help him out," Craycrayft said.

Firefighters bundled him up and took him back to the Bessemer Borough Fire Department where they warmed him up and successfully found his owners.
