PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — New analysis from AAA shows that the Pittsburgh Metro area ranks second in the state of Pennsylvania for texting-while-driving citations.

The law went into effect one year ago.

According to the study, there were a total of 1,302 citations issued across Pennsylvania during the first full year of the law being in effect.

The study shows 111 of them were in Allegheny County and nearly 200 citations were issued in the seven counties surrounding the Pittsburgh area, including Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

AAA East Central Director of Public Affairs Brian Newbacher said in a statement: “The goal is to change behavior and get people to stop texting behind the wheel. AAA is encouraged to see that law enforcement agencies are off to a great start in the process of educating drivers and saving lives.”

The Philadelphia Metro area ranked first in the state with 545 total texting citations.
