Suspect Accused Of Stealing Cash Box From Church Pierogi Sale Arrested

AMBRIDGE (KDKA) – The man accused of stealing a cash box from a church pierogi sale Friday afternoon in Beaver County is now in police custody.

The suspect is identifed 53-year-old Leroy Besong.

Police say they learned he was on a bus and intercepted Besong when he got off at a stop near the Ambridge Police station.

The hold-up happened Friday morning at Saint Peter and Paul Ukranian Church in Ambridge.

A woman in her 80s tried to wrestle the cash box away from the robber.

She did not want to be identified or have her face shown on camera.

"He was almost, I'm going to say almost six foot, and he was on the thin side; he wasn't real heavy. He had sunglasses on and… a real bright green, a hooded top on," she said. "After he told me he wanted three dozen, then he grabbed for the drawer, the drawer where I had the money box. He grabbed for it; I tried to grab it off of him, and he pushed me. He pushed my hands away."

Surveillance video showed the suspect running from the church and the truck he used to get away.

A woman was driving it. Police said they expect to have her in custody sometime soon.
