PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – For the first time in the school’s history, the South Park High School girls’ basketball team won the PIAA state championship.

“I’m trying to get used to it, but yes, the AAA state champions,” Head Coach Reggie Wells said.

The team came back from playing in Hershey and was escorted by police cars and met by a cheering crowd.

Some members of the team were surprised, but touched by the community’s support.

“I mean, it was amazing that the whole community’s behind us,” forward Ali McGrath said. “I didn’t know they were going to be like this, so it was just so exciting seeing everyone here.”

Wells said he still can’t believe the team won, but he’s proud of the team.

“They’re unbelievable, they work so hard, but to get the chance to do this and to pull it off — hey, my hat’s off to them,” Wells said.
