Pitt AD, Pederson Discusses Dixon's Contract Extension

PITTSBURGH (93.7 THE FAN)--The University of Pittsburgh extended head basketball coach, Jamie Dixon through the 2022-23 season on Saturday. To talk about the contract extension, Athletic Director Steve Pederson joined the Fan Morning Show on Monday.

While Dixon's teams have performed well during the regular season, they have underachieved during the post season.

"What you want is a great program that consistently plays well and has a chance to go to the tournament on a regular basis," Pederson said, "and then you are going to get your chance to go deep in the tournament."

The non-conference schedule for Pitt the last few seasons has not been as strong as it could be. Steve tells us that the team has tried to work out more difficult opponents outside of their conference, but other teams are cautious about coming here to play in the Petersen Events Center because it is such a hostile environment.

With Pitt moving into the ACC, Pederson says that the basketball team's style of play will not change. "We are going to play like we play."

He also shares a story about how Ben Howland helped the program out of a dark period. But, Howland also brought Jamie Dixon along with him.
