Derry Rite Aid Robbed By Man Wearing Explosives

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police are looking for the man who robbed a Rite Aid in Derry Borough, while wearing explosives on his body.

Police say the man threatened to blow up the store, if he wasn't given drugs.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. at the Rite Aid on Y Street.

The suspect is described as a white male, about 6 feet tall, in his 30s and was seen driving a dark colored minivan.

Employees at the store filled a burlap sack with a significant amount of Oxycontin.

"The individual appeared to have a tape on his nose, with a wire coming from there down to his chest area when he appeared to have some kind of incendiary device on his chest," said Dan Stevens with the Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety. "It could have been a bomb; it could have been something else. We don't know what that is. We're still trying to ascertain what that was."

Police say this robbery is just the latest in a rash of pharmacy robberies around Westmoreland County. They're not saying if this one is connected to others.

Police also say that this investigation is made more difficult by the fact that the surveillance cameras were not working at this particular store.
