Pirates Pitching Coach Unsure Of Extent Of Wandy Rodriguez's Injury
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - With Starter Wandy Rodriguez going down with an injury early in Monday night's game against the Diamondbacks, it was up to the bullpen to pick up the slack, and Pirates Pitching Coach Ray Searage was very pleased with their effort.
Searage joined Starkey, Miller and Mueller on 93.7 The FAN to talk about the Wandy injury, but said the team doesn't have an official diagnosis just yet.
"I really don't have an update on that, I couldn't say one way or the other," he said. "We're going to have to wait until the doctors look at him and they did their tests, and whatever they need to do for him. As soon as we have some information, you'll know about it as Pirates nation will know about it."
With the bats still struggling at the start of the season, Searage tells The Fan as a pitching coach what, if anything he says to his pitchers about how to deal with that.
"We stay out of that," he said. "We control what we can control. We don't go into the hitters world. They're our teammates, yes. But when it comes down to stuff like that, they'll figure it out, but we still got to do our jobs no matter what."
Searage also weighed in on what he's looking to see from James McDonald, how new catcher Russell Martin is working with the staff and what he saw from Gerrit Cole before the team sent him back down to AAA.
