Refrigerant Tanks Explode During House Fire In Penn Hills

PENN HILLS (KDKA) -- A fire put a Penn Hills neighborhood on edge this morning when it caused some loud explosions.

It wasn't clear right away what the loud noises on Valemont Drive were, but within minutes, the smoke and flames told the story.

"I was getting ready to sit down and eat breakfast and I saw the smoke coming out of the garage," said Carolyn D'Happart, a neighbor.

The booms, smoke and flames were coming from the home at 732 Valemont.

Investigators say they found several tanks of refrigerant being stored in the garage there, which is what caused the loud noises in the neighborhood.

No one was injured, and firefighters were able to bring the fire under control quickly.

But the home sustained heavy damage.
