13-Year-Old Takes Police On Chase, Ends With Violent Crash

RANKIN (KDKA)- A police chase early Friday morning led to a violent crash along the Rankin Bridge.

The crash happened around 1 a.m. Friday.

Police noticed an SUV driving the wrong way near the Rankin Bridge. Officers turned around to pull the driver over, and that's when the SUV sped off.

Witnesses say it was going nearly 100 miles per hour.

The 13-year-old driver of the SUV then lost control, hit the sidewalk railing on the side of the bridge, flipped the vehicle and ended up resting between the railing and a telephone pole.

The SUV -- which was stolen -- caught fire, and witnesses say a police officer had to step in and put out the flames.

"The car caught on fire," witness Jeff Walker said. "Thank goodness for the police officer, who went and got the fire extinguisher. I think he stopped a fatality."

Officials say the boy was under house arrest and wearing an ankle bracelet.

The teen was taken to Children's Hospital for treatment. He has serious injuries, but none are believed to be life-threatening.
