PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The 20-month-old child critically injured after suspected abuse died Sunday afternoon.

The toddler, Malachi Patterson, died at 12:28 p.m. at Children’s Hospital.

Patterson was first rushed to the hospital Friday after a 911 call was made saying that the toddler was unresponsive at an apartment in the Chestnut Ridge housing complex near Blairsville

He had bruises on his head, face and torso that doctors said were not the result of an accident.

They boy’s stepfather was charged Saturday on multiple accounts, accused of abusing the boy.

The man, 27-year-old Juan Campbell, told police that he did not assault the boy.

He is charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment.
