2 Dogs Being Treated For Antifreeze Poisoning In Fayette Co.

DUNBAR TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A family's two dogs suddenly became ill, and now a veterinarian says it's a case of antifreeze poisoning.

Dogs are often attracted to the sweet-tasting liquid, but the questions in this case are how and where the dogs got into it.

Lola and Sissy are now receiving an antidote at the Woodlands Animal Care Center in Farmington, Fayette County; but it'll be about three days before the vets know if the dogs will survive.

Karen Colbert, of Dunbar Township, says she came home to find her dogs unable to move, and she found vomit everywhere.

She rushed them to the center, and veterinarian Dr. Rebecca Wingfield says tests show without a doubt that the dogs were poisoned with antifreeze.

The Colberts say they've also found a dead stray cat, but the cat has not been tested.

Colbert fears someone deliberately poisoned the animals, but authorities have made no determination how the dogs got into the antifreeze.

The Fayette County SPCA is investigating, but says it can't comment on an ongoing investigation.

Since the veterinary bills could reach $6,000, the Woodlands Animal Care Center is accepting donations on the family's behalf.

"This can be very expensive for an owner," said Dr. Wingfield. "In an unexpected situation it can be devastating."
