Tunnel Closures Could Cause Traffic Nightmare On Busy Weekend

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It's a big weekend of events in our area, but some tunnel closures may make it difficult to get to them.

The Pirates play Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Pens play at CONSOL Energy Center on Saturday night. And there's also a concert from country music singer Brad Paisley at the First Niagara Pavilion.

It all sounds great until you factor in that the inbound Liberty Tube will closed Friday night and will stay closed all weekend, except for a five-hour window at 5 p.m. Saturday to allow Penguins fans to the game.

As for the outbound tube, it's going to close during overnight hours, but won't close until two hours after the Pirates game lets out on Friday and two hours after the Penguins game ends on Saturday.

Then, there's the Squirrel Hill Tunnel. It'll be closed inbound all weekend long.

If the detour route makes you crazy, PennDOT suggests taking the Turnpike to Harmar and coming into the city down Route 28. (Some of the work scheduled on 28 this weekend has been canceled.)

Another option is to take the Turnpike to Cranberry and come down the Parkway North.
