Swissvale SWAT Situation Ends Peacefully

SWISSVALE (KDKA) - A SWAT situation in Swissvale came to a peaceful conclusion Wednesday morning.

According to police, the incident happened in the 2600-block of Woodstock Terrace around 10:30 a.m.

Swissvale Police were initially called about a man who was allegedly suicidal and threatening to blow up the house where he lived.

When officers arrived, they noticed the smell of natural gas and evacuated everyone in the neighborhood.

The man was reportedly smoking a cigarette on his front porch. The SWAT team was called in and took the man into custody after they stormed his house. The man's neighbor, who lives in the same building, said he had locked her out of the house and was acting strange.

"I was sitting on the porch and he came home - He was out all night and I [saw] a can of beer there of course and he had a cigarette in his mouth and kept telling me, 'Irene, you have to get out… Do you want to die? I want to die," Irene Petrovay said.

"Officers could detect an odor of gas coming from the residence. He refused to come out, stood there with a lighter and said was going to blow up himself and the house," Swissvale Police Chief Greg Geppert said.

Police said this situation stems from heavy alcohol consumption. The man was reportedly taken to the hospital to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Everyone has been allowed back in the homes and no one was injured.
