Toddler Dies After Being Pulled From Swimming Pool In Canonsburg

CANONSBURG (KDKA) -- A 2-year-old boy died Monday evening after being pulled unresponsive from a swimming pool in Washington County.

The Washington County Coroner's Office identifies the boy as Blake Metzger, 2, of Canonsburg.

According to the coroner's office, relatives found Metzger unresponsive in the above ground pool in the backyard of a home on Richland Avenue just before 6 p.m.

"It can happen in a second," said the boy's mother April Sharratt. "Don't ever take your eyes off of your children, not even for a second."

He was rushed to Canonsburg Hospital, but was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 6:46 p.m.

The coroner has ruled the manner of death a drowning.

"We are going to celebrate his life and not mourn our loss," said the boy's father, Erik Metzger.

The incident remains under investigation by the coroner's office and the Canonsburg Police Department.

The swimming pool has since been dismantled.

A memorial fund has also been set up at PNC bank under the name "Blake Metzger."
