Water Main Break Damages Property In Crafton

CRAFTON (KDKA) - A water main break sent debris and rocks shooting down a Crafton street Thursday morning.

As hundreds of gallons of water rushed out, one family took the hardest hit, including a totaled custom-designed BMW.

It was a disturbing sight for the Bagovich family when they woke up to water shooting from the street. All that water going downstream and into their garage.

The top of their car was barely visible under at least four feet of water. The hole that opened up on Afton Street in was caused by a split in an eight-inch water main.

"Really, like a spring had just sprung under the Earth, right where that barricade is, and it was just pummeling out," Erin Toohey said.

Toohey said their home was saved from any water damage, but they watched as their neighbors took the brunt of the break.

"The whole entire area was completely submerged, including their driveway," Toohey said.

Sydnee Bagovich said the BMW in the garage is now totaled. A brand new water heater and HVAC unit were destroyed.

She said there was simply nothing they could do as water filled the garage. As emergency crews got on scene, they had to take a dangerous swim inside to shut off utilities.

Bagovich said there was a similar break back in the winter of 1999 that left icicles hanging from the pine tree in front of their house, but that one caused far less damage.
