Medical Frontiers: Blood Cancer

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — On this edition of Medical Frontiers, Dr. Gerald Pifer welcomed Dr. Cyrus Khan to discuss blood cancer.

Dr. Khan is a Hematologist and Medical Oncologist at West Penn Hospital.

Blood cancers are commonly known as liquid tumors. These cancers include various types of lymphomas and leukemia. Treatment options for blood cancer have changed significantly over the years.

"Stem cell transplant is an easier procedure now", said Dr. Khan.

The procedure is similar to a blood donation. In previous years, medical treatments like bone marrow transplants were much more complicated.

"Bone marrow transplant was not great for the donor because it required multiple sticks into the bone marrow and required a longer recovery time," said Dr. Khan.

The severity of blood cancer is a determining factor for which type of medical treatment a patient needs.

Dr. Khan concluded the show by providing expert advice to callers about blood cancer.

Medical Frontiers with Dr. Pifer airs every Monday night at 7 p.m. on NewsRadio 1020 KDKA.
