Man Held For Trial In Shooting Death Of Stepfather Over TV

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The man accused of killing his stepfather after an argument over a TV set was held for trial Friday.

Police say 20-year-old Aaron Israel is charged with the death of his stepfather, 45-year-old Kevin Kirkland.

Israel is accused of fatally shooting Kirkland July 28 at their East Carnegie home on Idlewood Avenue.

Testifying in City Court Friday was Kirkland's son, Kevin Kirkland, Jr.

According to the police criminal complaint, Israel's mother, Maria Kirkland, asked him to change the locks on their house. Around the same time, another child living in the house moved a TV from the first floor and took it upstairs.

Later, Kevin Kirkland showed up at the house and found himself locked out. After crawling in through a window, police say Kirkland accused Israel of stealing the TV. The two argued and got into a physical altercation.

Police said eventually Israel pulled out a black gun and shot Kirkland multiple times.

Kirkland was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Tonya Williams is the mother of Kirkland Jr.

"My kids don't know," said Williams. "The loss of their dad, it was senseless. It's just sad; a young man gone for nothing. We just buried him on Tuesday."

Israel did have one friend in the courtroom, Tayla Coulverson.

"It's a terrible loss for both sides, so I'm just trying to give my support as a friend," said Coulverson.

Israel is charged with criminal homicide and carrying a firearm without a license.
