Ross Township Woman Celebrates 109th Birthday

ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - Bagpipes hail the birthday of a woman who traded her native Scotland for Ellsworth, Pennsylvania 93 years ago.

She was sixteen at the time.

Marian Hall Home for seniors marks Louise Decker's 109th birthday.

Her great grandchildren, her granddaughter, and her son (a mere 88) celebrate a life well lived.

Louise says she never drank or smoked, and, "We never ate, overate, that's one thing.

I'd say more people dig their grave with their teeth than have starvation."

Art Decker says his mother had a sense of duty, "When we were in the army she gave 17 pints of blood when we were in the service, my brother and I."

That was World War II. His mother remembers world war I.

Diane Galbraith recalls a special moment for her grandmother and late husband, "75th wedding anniversary. You don't see that any more; a lot of people don't even live that long. But they had a huge party where everybody came in. The grandchildren, the great grandchildren. It was really a nice party."

Louise Decker tells us moderation is a key to longevity. Anything else?

"Just keep on breathing," she laughs.
