Woman Rescued From Burning Greensburg Apartment

GREENSBURG (KDKA) - A Greensburg woman had to be pulled from her burning apartment by firefighters.

The 24-year-old was rushed to UPMC Mercy hospital where she is listed in critical condition Wednesday night.

The fire broke out at her Highland Avenue apartment late Wednesday afternoon.

Fire officials say Lauren Helfer was pulled from the apartment by firefighters who found her on her 2nd floor bathroom.

Greensburg Police Officer Shawn Denning had just arrived at work and started his shift this afternoon, when a call came in about a working fire with entrapment.

Denning told KDKA's Ralph Iannotti, "Me and a firefighter went in the front door without our oxygen masks when we heard there was someone inside, but we were driven back by heavy smoke."

Helfer was found in the upstairs bathroom and carried down the rear steps by firefighters.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
