Governor Weighs In On Highmark And UPMC War Of Words

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - At a press briefing after he toured the Washington County Fair, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett said the ongoing war of words between UPMC and Highmark in local ads could mislead consumers and he wants them to tone it down.

"It has become clear to us cause we receive calls that people are confused by the issue by all the advertising," said Corbett.

"I would remind both of them that they are non profits and we think it's important that they keep in mind the needs of the consumers of western Pennsylvania first and foremost."

He would not speculate on whether there would be more governmental action, but said this:

"I'm not going to speculate on the future. I would certainly hope that based upon the conversations that my staff has had with them and agreements that they worked together to try to resolve some of these issues right now. They're still going to have issues, we understand that. Just the makeup of this whole thing because they are clearly competitors. But the confusion to the consumers concerns us and that's why we put out the statement."
