Hulton Bridge Construction To Affect Traffic Around Oakmont

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Defined and separated by our three rivers, we are a community dependent on our bridges.

And while many have all undergone major reconstruction, the Veterans Bridge was the last new span to open and that was 24 years ago. So standby for change.

"Probably at the end of the month, motorists will see visible signs of construction," said Steve Cowan with PennDOT, "where the Hulton Bridge is being replaced."

"I think it's a great thing," said Oakmont Condo Harbor Association Brad Prince. "Oakmont needs it really bad. It will be four lanes, two in each direction."

The new span will connect on the Oakmont side where the existing bridge lands.

"On the Freeport side, it's going to be about 75 feet upstream from the current bridge," Cowan said.

With a new Freeport Road intersection that will allow lanes to turn onto the new bridge, something locals say is long overdue.

"Even at rush hour, I see a lot of the traffic congestion going up through Harmarville," said Todd Schreckengost of Cheswick.

While most view the new span as needed, there is concern about the two-year construction phase.

"I think it's going to be a lot of congestion," said Dana Schreckengost of Cheswick.

"Change is needed and if you can adapt to change, it's a great thing and Pittsburgh is a growing area," Prince said.
