Bob Errey Previews Penguins Preseason

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) - The Pittsburgh Penguins' preseason has begun, and ROOT Sports analyst Bob Errey is there to break it down with Sportsradio 93-7 The Fan's Vinnie and Cook.

During Thursday's scrimmage, goalie Marc-Andre Fleury let in four goals, including three on the first three shots he faced.

Errey reports, "Yeah, a few went by him but he was playing against the Dupuis-Kunitz-Crosby unit. I talked to him after, and he's in good spirits looking forward to the season."

The Penguins welcome defenseman Rob Scuderi back to the squad, and Errey thinks Scuderi brings one attribute in particular.

"It's reliability," Errey says. "Like you're driving a car that has 250,000 miles on it and it's going to keep going and going. You know what you're getting. For coaches and goaltenders, it's so nice to have a guy like Rob Scuderi in front of the net."

Meanwhile, the Penguins are still over the salary cap as camp begins, and many in the media are speculating that Matt Niskanen could be the odd man out when camp ends. Errey isn't so sure.

"I don't know if he's the obvious guy," he says. "They really like him, number one. Is Jussi Jokinen going to play in a top-six role? I don't know. He didn't play in the playoffs. Is Dustin Jeffrey going to jump up and surprise everybody? No one is talking about him. Injury is going to play a role in this. Guys always get injured. You gotta put a guy on long-term injury that's going to get you under the cap that allows you to keep Matt Niskanen. There are so many dynamics that play into this."
