Penguins Make More Cuts To Training Camp Roster

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) –The Pittsburgh Penguins trimmed their training camp roster some more over the weekend.

According to the Penguins' website, eight players were reassigned to the team's AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Sunday afternoon.

The eight players reassigned were forwards Nick Drazenovic, Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond, Steve MacIntyre, Jayson Megna and Adam Payerl. Defensemen Scott Harrington, Philip Samuelsson and Brendan Mikkelson were also sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

However, Drazenovic, MacIntyre and Mikkelson must clear waivers before being eligible to report to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Those players will be on waivers until noon Monday.

The moves now leave the Penguins with 35 players in camp, including 20 forwards, 12 defensemen and three goaltenders.

The role of backup to Marc-Andre Fleury changed drastically over the weekend when Tomas Vokoun underwent a procedure to dissolve a blood clot in his pelvis.

Vokoun will be out of action for an indefinite amount of time.

For now, it appears Jeff Zatkoff will be given the opportunity to earn the backup goaltender position.

Zatkoff, 26, was stellar in his first season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins last season, posting a 26-20 record to go along with a 1.93 GAA and a .920 save percentage.

The Penguins will be back in action tonight when they host the Chicago Blackhawks at CONSOL Energy Center for a preseason contest.

You can watch that game on WPCW-TV at 7 p.m. Pregame coverage starts at 6:30 p.m.
