'Orange Is The New Black' Writer Has Ties To Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – "Orange is the New Black" is becoming one of the most popular shows on television and one of the writers is a Pittsburgh-native.

The show is described as edgy, dramatic, funny and is only airing on Netflix.

It is all about the life of Piper Chapman, a woman who was sent to federal prison for transporting drug money.

The show is loosely based on a true story.

One of the writers, Lauren Morelli, grew up in the North Hills.

"It's my first professional writing job, so it's been really exciting," Morelli said.

Exciting, overwhelming and exhilarating all at the same time.

Morelli started writing scripts as a hobby. She eventually signed on with a manager and an agent and then got her big break.

She was hired by the creator of "Orange is the New Black."

"Absolutely one of the best moments of my life. I was at home with my husband and I knew, it's so surreal to have that moment where you know your life is changing and I knew that's what that phone call was," Morelli said.

Morelli travels between Los Angeles and New York. But she enjoys being back home where her family still lives.

"I try to get back as much as possible, but I feel like every time I come back, there are new restaurants and dance performances that are happening. It's really incredible. I feel like I'm a spokesperson for Pittsburgh in Los Angeles. I'm constantly talking about what a great city it is," Morelli said.

Season one is already on Netflix and the second season is already in production.

Morelli will be speaking tonight at the University of Pittsburgh as part of the Steeltown Spotlight Series.
