PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many local organizations are doing their part to educate people about the disease.
That includes the Rivers Casino.READ MORE: St. Patrick's Day Parade In Pittsburgh Sees Smaller Crowd For Celebrations In September
In all their glory, in different colors and sizes, over 7,000 bras were strung up along the River Walk.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation in Pittsburgh said the reminder should be that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the fight is going on for so many women and families.
The inspiration for this comes from those women.
“We have a lot of team members and a lot of guests who have a personal connection to this cause and we’re just out here to support it and find a cure,” Rivers Casino Assistant General Manager Bud Green said.
Rivers Casino started this event last year. They’ve been collecting bras for a couple of weeks, sweetening the deal by offering vouchers to play at the casino for all that donated. But, to help the cause even more, a large donation was made to Komen Pittsburgh.READ MORE: Male Suspect In Custody After 3 People Shot At Baby Shower At Kinloch Volunteer Fire Department
“We were going to donate a dollar for every bra that was donated, but we rounded that up to $20,000 just to support the cause. It’s a great cause and we’re definitely glad to be part of it again,” Green said.
Representatives with the Susan G. Komen Foundation said the money is certainly being put to good use.
“Anyone in the City of Pittsburgh or in the region actually, 34 counties, can get a free mammogram because of the Mammogram Voucher Program. And it’s because of donations because of events like this that allow this to happen,” Judy Herstine saod.
“And to keep the good deed going all of the bras will be washed and donated to charity.
