Police Probe Fatal Brighton Heights Shooting

BRIGHTON HEIGHTS (KDKA) – One person was killed during an apparent home invasion in Brighton Heights early Sunday morning.

According to police, the incident happened at a home in the 3400-block of Fleming Avenue around 3:15 a.m.

A man inside the home called 911 to report he had shot another man who had broken into his house. When police, arrived they found the victim in the first floor hallway and recovered a .9 mm Bersa handgun.

The 37-year-old male victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the victim was the ex-boyfriend of a woman who lived in the home. The ex-boyfriend allegedly kept calling her and saying he was coming over to the house.

The victim went to the house and had a confrontation with the woman in the doorway. He allegedly forced his way inside and attacked her by punching her in the face and assaulting her with the gun.

The woman fell to the ground and the victim allegedly started to make his way up the stairs to confront the current boyfriend. At that time, the woman ran to a neighbor's home to call 911.

The current boyfriend saw the victim coming up the stairs and pointed a gun at him twice. At that time, the current boyfriend fired his weapon, which struck the victim in the torso and knocked him to the ground.

He then called 911 to report the shooting. As part of the investigation, it was determined that the gun was legally registered to the shooter.

Names of all involved have not been released at this time. However, the woman's two children, ages 10 and 15, were home at the time of the shooting, but neither were injured.

The shooter was initially detained, but has since been released after being interviewed by police. The District Attorney's Office is now investigating.
