Jitney Driver, Passenger Shot In Beltzhoover

BELTZHOOVER (KDKA) - Police are investigating after a gunman opened fire on a vehicle in Beltzhoover Monday night.

According to police, a jitney driver picked up two or three passengers on Taft Avenue just before midnight.

"Heard a lot of shots, boom, boom, boom, and came out here and all this was happening," one neighbor said.

Neighbors heard the commotion first and then saw a cluster of damaged vehicles and a driver lying in a pool of blood on the sidewalk.

"There was a lot of blood on the side of my house. There was some money laying all over there," Vernon Vereen said.

Pittsburgh Police said the jitney driver, who was behind the wheel of a gold van, had just picked up passengers when someone started shooting.

"The jitney driver picked up two to three people on Industry Street, went about 100 yards and when he made the left off of Industry Street onto Taft Avenue, someone came out of the bushes and fired several shots at him," Pittsburgh Police Lt. Bill Mathias said.

One of the passengers was found on Industry Street with a gunshot wound. The driver was shot twice.

In an attempt to get away, the driver slammed on the gas, but as he turned onto Climax Street he lost control.

"He must have been going 80, 90 miles per hour, to hit my car and total my other car and then push it over to the gate," Vereen said.

Three cars were damaged along with Vereen's fence. The gunman was able to get away.

This is the second shooting involving a jitney driver in just days in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Police plan to work with witnesses and the jitney driver to get additional information for this investigation.

Meanwhile, the driver and passenger who were shot are expected to be okay.
