Fayette Co. Man To Get New Kidney From Son

FAYETTE COUNTY (KDKA) -- When Larry Keefer of Bullskin Township, Fayette County, learned that he needed a kidney transplant, he wasn't sure how long the wait would be.

But then his son, 24-year-old Shawn, said he would donate one of his.

His son says he never hesitated over his decision, and while he says it's scary to think he'll be left with only one kidney, he has to do it for the dad who has done so much for him.

Keefer has a kidney condition that went undetected until a crash 17 years ago when it turned up during testing. In the years since, medication has helped him through, but now doctors say he needs the transplant.

It's unclear how they'll pay for the operations. While Keefer's insurance will pay for his transplant, it won't pay for his son's donor surgery.

Keefer says that alone could cost more than $200,000, and even with possible government help, they could face a hefty bill.

Volunteers have organized a fundraiser for the Keefer family to cover a variety of medical bills.
