New Castle Hit-And-Run Leaves 2 Injured

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A man and a woman were struck by a van Monday night while crossing North Jefferson Avenue in the City of New Castle.

Police have not identified the victims who were taken to Jefferson Health Systems for treatment after the accident.

The victims were believed to be in their late teens, or early 20s.

Ray Covert Jr. and his sister, Diane Hake witnessed the accident.

Hake said the driver of the van actually stopped, got out, and kept asking, "Are you OK? Are you OK?" and he kept cursing. Then he took off.

She said, "We thought he was going to stop [and wait for police], but he never did."

Covert said the gray van was traveling at a high rate of speed, and it hit the two pedestrians as they were crossing the street.

Covert said the man went flying and landed on his knees and stomach.

Lawrence County 911 said at last report, police in the area were still looking for the van, which was described gray and having front-end damage.
