Evaluating The Big Deals, Big Busts This Black Friday

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Black Friday shoppers love the thrill of getting a good bargain.

But experts say just because it's on sale doesn't make it a deal.

"You want to evaluate the deals because a lot of the door busters, for example, may be stripped down versions of better products or they may come with an accessory or two that you don't necessarily want or need," Vera Gibbons, financial expert, said.

Gibbons says televisions, laptops and desktop computers are good items to shop for on Black Friday.

This year, you may even get a deal on Apple products.

Not at the Apple store, but at other retailers who may offer a gift card incentive with your purchase.

"They have a lot of overstock, so this is not the newest, latest and greatest devices, but it's for models that would work perfectly fine for kids in your household," said Gibbons.

Some items to avoid:

  • Exercise equipment – which usually goes on sale in January.
  • Same with winter coats and apparel – those will go on clearance after the holidays.
  • Toys are generally cheaper in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
  • Kitchen items – wait until December.

"On average there are 16 percent less expensive in early December than they are on Black Friday," Gibbons said.
