Steelers Hold Blood Drive In Heinz Field Locker Room

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It's been said that Steelers fans bleed black and gold, but on this day, they were giving blood.

Thursday's blood drive was held right inside the team's own locker room in Heinz Field.

"We really try to reward those who are the giving type, who come out and donate blood and support life by giving them these extra behind the scenes tours and autographs of Steelers' alumni players and seeing where the team suits up on game day," said Tamara Kilgore, of the Central Blood Bank. "It gives that extra thank you to them for helping us."

These are diehard Steelers fans, and today they get the treat of coming to Heinz Field to give the gift of life.

They say that is much more important than the number of wins and losses their favorite team might have.

"One of my three adoptive kids had to have a platelet transfusion," said Terry Michel, a blood donor. "I did it before then, but I still do it."

And there are lots of incentives to get volunteers to the blood drive, including a chance to win the trip of a lifetime -- two tickets on the Steelers Cruise in March.

"We are hoping to get about 200 donors to come down today and give the gift of life and help us out during the holiday season when it is typically more challenging to us because of people's schedules and just not having blood donation on top of mind," Kilgore said.
