Penguin Babies To Debut At National Aviary
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Officials at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh say a newborn pair of endangered African penguins will soon be making their public debut.
The chicks will be on view to the public starting on Thursday.
One chick is female and hatched Nov. 29. The other is male and hatched Dec. 2. They haven't been named.
The new additions bring the facility's African penguin colony population to 18.
The species has been declared endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Commercial fishing, destruction of their habitat, pollution and other factors are to blame.
The penguins live off the southern coast of Africa and are smaller than Emperor penguins in Antarctica.
