Man Stabbed During Attempted Robbery In Beechview

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police are investigating after a man was stabbed during an attempted robbery while on his way home from work in Beechview earlier this week.

Officials with Pittsburgh Police say it happened around 8 a.m. Monday on the city steps near Beechview Avenue and Methyl Street.

Darryl Mauer had just moved to the Beechview area from Coraopolis three-months ago.

He says he was walking home when he passed a man leaning on a railing.

"He turned and was like, give me your wallet, and I said no. He pulled out a knife and said give me your wallet again, I said no. He made some kind of move, so I ended up hitting him in the face," Mauer said.

The suspect, who police say was holding a knife in his hand, then tried to punch the suspect. The victim tried to block the punch and ended up getting stabbed in the left forearm, police said.

The suspect ran down the steps, heading toward Methyl Street.

He is described as an African American male who was wearing a brown coat and black tossel cap.

Mauer was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and is expected to be okay.

He had a word of advice for his fellow neighbors.

"Be aware of your surroundings, know what;'s going on. If you see someone that looks shady, go the other way."

Pittsburgh Police continue to investigate the incident.
