1 Arrested After Large Sums Of Cash & Pot Found In Apartment
SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) - What started off as a shots fired call in the South Side ended up with an arrest and a surprising discovery.
According to police, Alexander Overby was firing shots out of a second floor window of an apartment building in the South Side Slopes.
That is what initially brought police to the scene, but once they got inside his apartment, they found guns, money and a significant amount of marijuana.
"Around one o'clock in the morning, I heard several gunshots. About eight," Ray Thompson, a neighbor, said.
When Overby allowed police inside the apartment, police said they quickly noticed a bucket packed with what appeared to be marijuana.
"When they went back to search the apartment, they found over 20 pounds of marijuana, $17,443 in cash and two handguns," Pittsburgh Police Sgt James Perry said.
Police say the shots were being fired in the direction of the auto body shop across the street and say shell casings were found in Overby's apartment.
No one was hurt and while it's unclear why he fired off the rounds, police said it allowed them to find and prevent a lot of drugs from making it to the streets.
"Sometimes we luck out. But once again, the officers took advantage of the situation. They followed proper protocol, secured a search warrant and were able to seize all these drugs and guns," Sgt. Perry said.
Police are still trying to determine if any property was damaged from the gunfire. If so, additional charges could be filed.
As of now, Overby is facing charges of possession, possession with intent to deliver and discharging a firearm in the city.
