Westmoreland County Crash Leaves 2 Dead

SOUTH HUNTINGDON (KDKA) – A mother and her young son were killed in a Thursday morning accident in Westmoreland County.

According to emergency dispatchers, the accident happened around 7 a.m. in the 1600-block of Route 981 in South Huntingdon.

State police investigators say 31-year-old Jillian Trayter of was behind the wheel when her car crossed the center line directly into the path of a pickup truck with the snow plow on the front, pulling the trailer.

"He saw her coming, he slowed down in an attempt to avoid impact with her," said Trooper Stefani Plume, of Pennsylvania State Police.

The collision completely ripped apart Trayter's vehicle. Trayter's 2½ -year-old baby boy, Calin Harvey Trayter, was in the backseat.

"There were witnesses that tried to render assistance to the victim in the car, one was a nurse who once she got to the vehicle knew it wasn't possible," said Trooper Plume.

Westmoreland County's Coroner pronounced both mother and child dead at the scene.

The unidentified driver of the pickup truck was treated and released for minor injuries, but was said to of been in a state of shock.

This horrific accident with its tragic results also affected first responders and state troopers.

"To have to see something like this, it's not something you ever want to do," said Trooper Plume.
