Fire Prompts Evacuations At Marshall Twp. Shopping Plaza

MARSHALL TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A fire forced the evacuation of a popular shopping plaza in Marshall Township this afternoon.

Crews were first called to the plaza along Route 910 where T-Bones market is located around 2:30 p.m.

The fire broke out on the roof of the plaza, but did not spread to the market.

According to initial reports from the scene, the fire may have started in a transformer on the roof.

"Turns out, the only thing that was actually burned was the marquee on the building where it says 'T-Bones' and that's usual from a neon transformer or something like that," said Chief Phil MacMillan, of the Marshall Township Fire Department. "I haven't got a chance to get up there and look at that yet."

It prompted the evacuation of all businesses.

Employees at dry cleaners said they could smell smoke but couldn't find source.

"All the sudden, someone from the BP station called one of the ladies that work upstairs and said the smoke is coming from the top, so that's when we knew it was actually on fire," Michelle Ziegler, an employee at the dry cleaners.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was contained to the roof and there was minimal damage.

The cause remains under investigation.
