Greene County Coroner Probes Nursing Home Patient's Death

WAYNESBURG (KDKA) -- The Greene County Coroner's Office is investigating the death of an elderly woman at a nursing home.

The coroner's office was called to the Golden Living Center in Waynesburg around 6:30 a.m. last Saturday, Feb. 22.

According to the coroner's office, 94-year-old Irene Sansone died after sliding off of her bed.

Officials say she either tried to get out of bed or accidentally moved her legs off of the bed and then slid off of the mattress.

Her head then became lodged between the mattress and the bed rail and she was unable to free herself, investigators said.

Authorities with the coroner's office ordered an autopsy.

Her death has been ruled as accidental asphyxiation due to compression.

Sansone had lived in the nursing home since August of 2013.

The investigation continues.
