Teen Dies After Being Struck By Dump Truck In McKeesport

McKEESPORT (KDKA) -- A teenage girl who was rushed to Children's Hospital Thursday afternoon after she was struck by a dump truck while crossing a street in McKeesport has died.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office says the girl passed away just before 8:20 p.m. at Children's Hospital.

She has been identified by officials as 14-year-old Alyson Higdon of McKeesport.

Emergency dispatchers say the accident happened at the intersection of Hartman Street and O'Neil Boulevard after 3 p.m.

Officials at the scene say the 14-year-old was crossing Eden Park Boulevard behind another group of kids when she was hit.

"She may have tried to cross the street while the light was red, but the light turned green and traffic started moving and she may have darted in front of the truck," said Lt. Andrew Schurman, of Allegheny County Police. "We believe her view may have been obstructed by a school bus that was in line waiting to move in traffic."

She was taken by medical helicopter to Children's Hospital for treatment of injuries to her lower extremities, but later died.

Roads in the area were closed into the evening as police investigated the accident.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.
