St. Anthony's Church In Monongahela Closing

MONONGAHELA (KDKA) -- Declining numbers has claimed another Catholic church in our area.

Bishop David Zubik on Saturday announced that Saint Anthony's Roman Catholic Church on Park Avenue in Monongahela will close its doors next month.

The parish in that area will now have one church building instead of two, which Bishop Zubik says will help build unity.

"I know what a lot of these people are feeling because the church that I was baptized in, I received First Holy Communion in and celebrated my first Mass, it too had to close. But the most important thing is that the church is growing in its enthusiasm, maybe not the numbers, but grown in enthusiasm," said Bishop Zubik.

"It's my hope and prayer that after seven difficult years of trying to decide what was going to happen here, I hope that now as we move on that these people can really be one," he added.

Saint Anthony's will close on April 28.

Parishioners will then worship at what is now the Transfiguration Church, but will change to be called Saint Damian of Molokai Church.
