Child, 2, Dies In McKeesport Fire

MCKEESPORT (KDKA) - A 2-year-old girl died in a fire that destroyed three homes and damaged another Sunday night.

According to officials at the scene, the fire broke out at a home on Soles Street around 11:30 p.m. and quickly spread to three adjacent homes.

Four families have been displaced as a result of the fire.

"Unfortunately, she perished in the fire, so we will be on scene until we find her," McKeesport Fire Chief Kevin Lust said.

Ernest Tigney, a neighbor, said despite the wishes of so many to go in after her, there was no way to get past the fierce flames.

"I feel sorry for the mother. Nothing we can do. The house was getting worse," Tigney said.

However, a distraught young cousin of the victim did try to go in and suffered second-degree burns in the process.

"It was a cousin that sat there and tried to go back in and a neighbor sat there and ran up and got him before he went back," Chief Lust said.

The child was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital with some burns.

Chief Lust said two sisters lived in the home with their five children.

The mother of the girl that died is out of town visiting a relative in Florida. The search for the little girl's body was put off until daylight, which was difficult due to part of the home collapsing.

Mary Robb Jackson Reports:

"There was floor collapse and the fire looks like it took almost half of the upper floor down into the basement," Chief Lust said.

The cause of the fire is unknown and Allegheny County fire marshals began their investigation Monday morning.
