Vigil Held For Girl, 10, Killed In Washington Shooting

WASHINGTON (KDKA) – Dozens of friends and family remembered a 10-year-old girl who was shot and killed in Washington County.

According to the Washington County Coroner's Office, the shooting happened at a home on West Chestnut Street in Washington.

The girl, Taniyah Thomas, was transported to Washington Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Dozens of relatives who live in the area attended a vigil for Thomas Monday night.

"All of our family has came from everywhere to be with us, and to help us find, find out what happened," Thomas' grandmother, Venus Deck, said.

The suspect allegedly got in through the front door of the apartment building and went upstairs apparently planning a home invasion.

Thomas heard the commotion, got out of her bed and walked in the hallway, heading for her mother's bedroom.

At that time, the gunman shot through the front door of the apartment and hit Thomas.

Thomas' grandfather, Sherman Brown, blames the mother's boyfriend and thinks this was drug-related.

"Why would they come to somebody's house and break in and then go to shooting? She was an innocent girl just lying on her bed and got shot and died. And that's terrible. I'm just so upset," Sherman Brown said.

"Come forward because that little baby didn't do anything, and she's an innocent bystander, and she had a life ahead of her," Deck said.

Thomas' father, Curtis Thomas, begged for answers at her vigil.

"She did not deserve this, and somebody knows something, somebody come forward."
