Elderly Residents' Elevator Fixed In Wilkinsburg

WILKINSBURG (KDKA) -- It is something no one has seen at the Gable Ridge Apartments in Wilkinsburg in nearly two weeks - the elevator door opening.

For Clare Coleman, it's a pretty big deal.

Clare is 85-years-old and lives on the third floor. The last time she tried to walk the stairs from her third floor apartment; she was injured and had to be hospitalized.

Just down the hall from Clare lives 102-year-old Kitty West, she wanted out help as well.

KDKA's Marty Griffin: "Do you need an elevator, ma'am?"

West: "Of course I do."

Griffin: "Are you trapped in here?"

West: "I'm trapped."

Well, she's trapped no more.

Shortly after we found the apartment manager last Friday - who refused to talk to us - she apparently made some phone calls. A repair company was there shortly after we left.

"The man came that day, after you left," said Coleman. "He didn't have the part, but he said he was going to go everywhere until he found the part, and he did. He had that elevator on a couple hours after you left here."

The elevator broke nearly two weeks ago; residents were told the parts couldn't be found.

On the third floor with residents in their 80s, 90s and even a 102-year-old, that's a significant problem.

Well, it's not a problem anymore. The residents couldn't be more grateful.
