Police Pursuing Several Tips In Washington Girl's Shooting Death

WASHINGTON (KDKA) - Washington Police continue to investigate the fatal shooting of a 10-year-old girl.

Taniyah Thomas was sleeping in her room when she heard gunshots outside and got up to seek comfort from her mother Monday morning.

She was walking through the hallway of the West Chestnut Street home when two gunshots came through the front door and hit her in the head and shoulder.

KDKA's Bob Allen Reports:

"She was bright. She was an honor roll student. She was beautiful. She was a beautiful spirit and they took her away from me," Thomas' father, Curtis, said. "All I want is justice for my daughter. She did not deserve this."

Police say tips have been pouring in over the last 24-hours and they plan to follow up on each and every one of them.

They have not yet speculated on a motive, but KDKA has learned that the little girl's mother- 34-year-old Shantye Brown - was arrested in January on drug charges.

The mother's live-in boyfriend also has drug-related convictions.

KDKA's Trina Orlando Reports:

Last night, dozens of family members and friends attended a vigil outside of the home where the little girl was living with her mother and her mother's boyfriend.

Police say they are committed to solving this case. They are continuing to seek help from the community.
