Landslide Blocks Road In West Mifflin

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Part of Route 837 in West Mifflin was blocked off Friday morning after a landslide.

It happened before 7 a.m. Friday and there's some mud and a tree partially blocking the inside lane, basically between the Duquesne-McKeesport Bridge and the Mansfield Bridge.

Fortunately though, crews were able to clean up the mess fast.

"By the time I got here, the West Mifflin Police had a little bit of it cleared out and they were letting big tractor trailers and stuff through," said Anthony D'Angelo with PennDOT.

Eventually, traffic was rerouted. PennDOT crews had to block off the roadway in both directions for clean up. Heavy equipment was brought in.

"We brought a front end loader over, a couple dump trucks, just scooped it up and hauled it out of here, cut up the trees," D'Angelo said.

Once the debris was removed from the road, a street cleaner took care of the rest of the mud. It took just a couple of hours to clear the scene.

Crews say they are used to this type of cleanup, especially this time of year.

And with more rain in the forecast, crews say they won't be surprised if more slides pup up all across the county.
