1 Dead, 1 Injured In Chartiers City Shooting

WINDGAP (KDKA) - One person was killed and another was injured in a Chartiers City shooting Saturday night.

According to police, the shooting happened at a birthday party on Chartiers Street around 9:43 p.m. near the former Chartiers Elementary School.

The party was also supposed to be a memorial for a man killed in Sheraden about a year ago. About 100 people were gathered at the park for the event.

The Medical Examiner's Office has identified the fatal shooting victim as Edward Deakings, 24, of Wilkinsburg.

A second man was shot in the hand, but took himself to Allegheny General Hospital. His condition is unknown.

There was reportedly lots of drinking, marijuana use and gambling at the park.

"Public Works does a great job at keeping this place clean, but this is one of the few parks that you really don't need a permit, it's first-come, first-serve," one man said. "So with that ... without a permit there's a lack of accountability."

Police are still looking for a suspect and there's no word on a motive.

Pittsburgh City Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith says because of a lack of a permit, police did not know about the event and that in the future, a permit will be required.
