School Board Meets For First Time Since Franklin Regional Stabbings

MURRYSVILLE (KDKA) – Credit to the community for resilience.

That was the message at the first Franklin Regional School Board meeting since the stabbings.

"It's been a trying time for everyone," said Franklin Regional Public Relations Director Mary Catherine Reljac.

Honest and open feelings were abundant inside the Franklin Regional School Board meeting Monday night. It was the first meeting since the April 9 stabbing spree that took place inside Franklin Regional High School.

"It was a defining moment in the lives of those immediately affected as well as all who live in Murrysville, Delmont and Export," said School Board President Dr. Lawrence Boreland.

Boreland and the superintendent both read prepared statements thanking all involved for standing "FR Strong."

"My sincere thoughts and prayers continue to focus on our students, staff and families who were injured physically or impacted emotionally," said Superintendent Dr. Gennaro Piraino.

The board also credited preparedness by staff and students for saving lives.

Counseling services have been offered on site by mental health professionals for those in need.

"I wouldn't say that we're recovered...I would say we are making great strides towards the healing process and I don't think this is something that we have the blueprint for," said Reljac.
